1. API 5L Steel Grade Classification Rules
API 5L pipeline steel is graded mainly based onminimum yield strength, measured in ksi (1ksi≈6.895MPa). The classification is comprehensively defined by PSL quality grade, mechanical properties and chemical composition.
1.1 Steel Grade Parameters and GB Standard Correspondence
"X" stands for dedicated pipeline steel, and the number indicates the minimum yield strength. The correspondence between mainstream steel grades and Chinese GB standards is as follows:
X42: 42ksi (≥290MPa), GB grade L290
X60: 60ksi (≥415MPa), GB grade L415
X70: 70ksi (≥483MPa), GB grade L485
1.2 Differences Between PSL1 and PSL2 Quality Grades
- PSL1 (Basic Grade): No mandatory low-temperature impact test, loose impurity tolerance, high cost performance. Suitable for normal-temperature, low-pressure and short-distance conventional fluid transmission pipelines.
- PSL2 (Strict Grade): Mandatory low-temperature impact test, strict control of sulfur and phosphorus impurities, stricter yield-tensile ratio and toughness indicators with excellent crack resistance and low-temperature resistance. Applicable to high-pressure, long-distance, harsh field pipelines and pipelines for flammable and explosive media.
2. Core Parameter Comparison of X42/X60/X70 Pipeline Steel
The core differences among the three grades lie in strength, toughness, machinability and pressure bearing capacity. The following are core measured parameters under PSL2 standard, which can be directly used for engineering design and procurement verification.

3. Working Condition Adaptation of Each Steel Grade
3.1 X42 Pipeline Steel
Made of low-alloy high-purity material with excellent plasticity and weldability, convenient construction and high cost performance, it is a universal steel grade for low-pressure pipelines.
Applicable Scenarios: Municipal water supply and drainage, low-pressure gas branch pipelines, factory short-distance circulating pipelines, auxiliary oilfield transmission pipelines, conventional chemical fluid pipelines.
Applicable Working Conditions: Transmission pressure ≤4MPa, normal temperature environment, short-distance laying, civil and ordinary industrial pipeline projects.
3.2 X60 Pipeline Steel
A medium-strength universal pipeline steel with balanced strength and toughness, combining pressure bearing capacity and construction economy, serving as the mainstream choice for industrial pipe networks.
Applicable Scenarios: Regional gas transmission and distribution trunk lines, medium and small oilfield gathering pipelines, medium-pressure industrial fluid transmission pipelines, conventional long-distance mountain branch pipelines.
Applicable Working Conditions: Transmission pressure 4–8MPa, temperate conventional climate, medium and long-distance industrial transmission projects.
3.3 X70 Pipeline Steel
A high-strength micro-alloy pipeline steel with outstanding pressure resistance, crack resistance, low-temperature resistance and fatigue resistance, specially used for high-pressure long-distance trunk transmission pipelines.
Applicable Scenarios: Cross-regional long-distance oil and gas trunk pipelines, energy pipelines in alpine regions, high-pressure large-flow industrial transmission pipelines, nearshore complex working condition pipelines.
Applicable Working Conditions: Transmission pressure ≥8MPa, extremely cold/harsh field environment, long-distance laying, high-safety key projects.
4. Engineering Selection Summary
1. Strength gradient: X70>X60>X42; Machinability and cost performance gradient: X42>X60>X70.
2. X42 is preferred for low-pressure normal-temperature civil pipelines; X60 is the best choice for conventional medium-pressure industrial pipelines; X70 is mandatory for high-pressure, long-distance and harsh-condition trunk pipelines.
3. PSL1 grade can be adopted for ordinary working conditions to reduce costs; PSL2 grade pipes must be used for core projects with flammable and explosive media, low temperature and high pressure.
